of getting STUCK.
Some people fear change. Others (I among them) look on and criticize. ”That is so unhealthy. Why would you fear such a wonderful thing as change?” we ask.
And yet, we are the ones who fear stagnancy.
Sometimes, we fear it so much that we will leave behind good friends, families, jobs, even our God.
We must face change with courage, but we must also understand that stability is a good thing. If you are dependable, you also might be a little bit boring, but it’s worth it!
God is not boring, but we can TRUST Him because His character is so consistant. Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Every being, human or heavenly, is infinitely complex. There will always be new things to learn about yourself, your God, those around you. We must keep growing, but we have to realize that growth may look different than we thought. Sometimes growth is a result of change, and sometimes growth is a result of the discipline of being dependable.
I have to fight to keep myself from constantly trying to move on to something new. I must grow and learn the things I need to learn here, in this job, in this place, with these people, before I can move on to a new part of my life. Sometimes I get arrogant and/or excited and think “I’ve learned all I need to know to move on! Let’s go!” But in Philippians 4:12, Paul speaks of the blessing of being content in every circumstance.
I am not suggesting that we should not move toward our goals. Learn from everything around you, do all you can, move when the time comes, and discipline yourself to stay when the time comes and grow in your current situation. God and other Christians can stimulate us to love and good works. We don’t have to rely only on a changing atmosphere for new epiphanies and growth.
Ephesians 5:15-21
15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
